I offer 3 courses to improve your navigation skills for trail running, fell running and mountain marathons.
The emphasis on these courses is on learning the skills rather than running fast so don’t worry about not being able to keep up, you can jog!
Introduction to Navigation Skills
This one day course covers the basics with topics such as understanding different types and scales of map, interpreting map features, taking & following compass bearings, understanding contour lines, grid references and route choice. If you have little or no experience with map and compass this is the course for you.

Advanced Navigation Skills
This one day course will benefit those who have basic map & compass skills but want to develop them further. It will look more closely at compass bearings, timing & pacing, route choice and relocation. It will take place in more remote and featureless terrain rather than on paths and is an ideal follow on from the introduction course and for runners wanting to practise their Mountain Marathon navigation skills. Please note that we will visit some rough and sometimes steep ground and so participants need to be comfortable on this type of terrain.

If you think you can navigate then put your skills to the test by doing it at night!
This 3 hour course is a fantastic way to hone your skills focusing much more on timing, pacing and compass work. Learn the techniques that will enable you to navigate confidently in bad visibility. This is an ideal course for runners preparing for a night navigation event or an ultra race where they will be running in the dark. Head torches can be loaned if you don’t have your own.
