A series of interactive, on line tutorials to help you learn various navigation skills and techniques from the comfort of home! The sessions will take place via Google Meet and last approximately 1 hour.
I suggest you take part using a laptop rather than phone so that you can clearly see the explanations on a large screen.
Small group size so that you have chance to ask questions during the tutorial.

Contour lines (understanding the shape of the ground)

Navigating on Access Land rather than using rights of way.
Route choice (pros and cons of different route options)
Timing (how long will your route take?)

Mountain Marathon Route Planning – tbc
This is a 2 hour interactive online tutorial where we will look at typical mountain marathon controls (checkpoints) and discuss the best strategies to navigate between them. Participants will have the chance to plan their routes and justify their decisions and then discuss other people’s routes and ideas. The tutorial will discuss techniques such as:
timing and pacing, handrails, aiming off, collecting features, attack points, catching features, aspect of slope, break of slope, relocation.
You don’t have to be an expert navigator to take part, the tutorial is suitable for anyone who has done, or is planning to take part in a mountain marathon. Small group size so plenty of chance for interaction.
What you will need.
Pen and paper to take notes.
You don’t need a paper map with you but if you want one handy we will use the Harvey Maps Superwalker 1:25,000 of Snowdonia.
